A few album releases recently, so you’ll see multiple songs from Ali Sethi, Daniya Kanwal, Mai Dhai, & the Saami Brothers. A really expansive playlist this time, starting from the bleeding edge of Karachi hip hop to live recordings from small qawwali mehfils.

We also wanted to take this moment to acknowledge a small milestone. We started curating new Pakistani music into this Hamnawa Select series in May 2021. Since then, we’ve put out a playlist of new music almost every month. The reason this is important to us, is that when we were younger and began to study and generally follow Pakistani music, it became clear that there were no organized archives. It was very difficult to understand how this art evolved, and to understand society through it. We latched on to a handful of long-form essays and good interviews. Hamnawa Select is our way of preventing that from happening again. When someone goes back in a decade to understand Pakistani music in the post-Covid era, they will know better how things morphed. This is also a good moment to thank you, our audience, for supporting us all these years.
