Introduction
The best Faris Shafi songs – and Introduction is one of them – deliver hard-hitting truth with two essential sides: some artfully constructed swearing, and a memefication of Pakistani culture into a soundbite. In this case, the memification is a reference to an old Shahi Supari ad.
The character in Introduction narrates a personal perspective. One that romanticizes objects of progress in the west, and figments of culture in East. Perhaps this is one manifestation of the ehsaas-e-kamtari (inferiority complex) that anchors the chorus. Underneath the bravado however is a realization that things around him are messed up, and perhaps he’s just as much to blame as everyone else.
Zain Ali’s production is the perfect fit for Faris. And Awais Gohar’s moonlit video shoot is classic.
